So I got a call from a PCM at the base with my MRI results. FINALLY. I've only been waiting almost a month for the results. Reason for the delay you ask, because my PCM (who sucked btw) was fired. She apologized repeatedly for the long wait and then gave me my results. So I've known about the herniated disk in my lumbar region since 2002 but it has gradually got worse over time with failed therapy, injections, and multiple pain medication attempts. I also have one in my neck as well which causes my neck to spasm and me to have continuous spasms and pain in my shoulders as well. So anyways back to the recent changes in the herniated disk in my lower back. The herniation is at l-5 S-1. The disk now has a grade 3 annual tear in it and is compressing on a nerve on the right side. My sciatic nerve is also more inflamed and shows signs of compression than they would like as well as my sacrum. My sacroiliac joints are also very inflamed. I also have significant DJD(arthritis) of the lumbar and sacral area. Back two years ago with my last MRI the DJD was minimal and of no concern. Now they are saying the DJD is very apparent and has spread to my sacral joints. They are very concerned w/ the possibility of drop foot and loss of feeling to my right foot and leg setting in. Especially since I already have numbness and tingling down my right leg and in my right foot the majority of the time. So what exactly does this mean for me? Well I'm in pain management currently under going multiple injections and for now that's the only method I am taking. Not to mention ER visits for Demerol and morphine injections during down time from the injections through pain management. They did enter in a referral for me to see a neuro surgeon and would like for me to go consult with him. Been there done that. I know it sounds dumb after reading my MRI results, but I really do not want to under go any type of back sx. My father had a very bad experience with his and although his back was about 20x worse than mine is all I can think of is how bad his went. I know he had severe herniation and drop foot as well as many other factors but still. Even my sister in law had back sx and she possibly needs repeat sx. I do not care to have multiple surgeries just to relieve my pain. So until I absolutely need it I'm going to do everything I can to avoid it. I just wish I wasn't at the point were all forms of muscle relaxers, anti inflamatories and pain pills dont work. Sure would make it a lot easier if I didn't have to take morphine and Demerol to get relief.
